American winemaker Paul Hobbs, known for producing highly acclaimed Pinot Noir and Chardonnay in California’s best regions, began consulting with Veramonte winemaking team on Pinot Noir and Chardonnay in 2007.
Hobbs studied oenology at the Notre Dame University, and then received masters degree in food science at University of California, Davis. His thesis led him to become technician at Robert Mondavi’s winery and in 1981 was appointed Head Enologist at Opus One. After several vintages with Opus One, Paul joined Simi Winery. In 1991 Paul Hobbs founded Paul Hobbs Winery setting out to produce small lot, hand-crafted, vineyard designate wines. In addition to making wine in California, and Mendoza with Viña Cobos, Hobbs consults with highly acclaimed wineries in the U.S., Argentina and Chile.
“In South America, Chile will be the leader in Pinot Noir and Casablanca is one of the leading areas. Pinot Noir from Casablanca stacks up very well with the best Pinot Noirs of world,” he says.
“Veramonte’s program is a pioneering project for Pinot Noir. There are only a handful of wineries with such a heavy focus on Pinot in Chile at this time.” |
Alvaro Espinoza is widely regarded as one of Chile’s top wine consultants. After his studies in Chile in agriculture and enology, Alvaro moved to Bordeaux and obtained his diploma in enology Over the years, Alvaro Espinoza has developed a winemaking philosophy with a strong belief in expressing terroir and in blending to achieve harmony and character. He was one of the first in Chile to distinguish Merlot from Carmenere in 1994 and pioneered biodynamic and organic viticulture in Chile.
Alvaro currently consults for many Argentine and Chilean wineries and has developed highly acclaimed wines including: Coyam, Ge, Vinedos Emiliana and Carmen Gold. Alvaro also crafts his own wines at Viña Antiyal, a small boutique winery in the Alto Maipo which he founded in 1997.
Alvaro brings tremendous experience with some of Chile’s best red wines to Veramonte along with his organic and biodynamic viticultural and farming knowledge and extensive experience developing vineyards throughout Chile. |
